First Three Months

Our next preparation time-period is the most daunting - three months. Hopefully, none of us will ever experience a post-disaster period where we need to rely on our own supplies for three months, but it could happen.

More likely, we may suffer personal tragedy where prudent planning will help sustain our families. Many of us may suffer job loss, health problems, or loss of a family member that might force us to rely on our stored supplies. Long-term preparedness and self-sufficiency builds peace of mind during times of personal and family hardship.

Continue to build up an adequate supply of food that is part of your normal, daily diet. Work toward storing enough to feed every family member for three months. Include a combination of basic food-storage staples (like flour, beans, and rice) as well as everyday food that is easily prepared. Build this supply up gradually, and you won't be overwhelmed by the task.

Water is more difficult to store for the long-term. Try to build up water storage for at least two weeks (one gallon per person per day). Make sure you have additional purification devices or chemicals for water treatment in your supplies.
